Kulmbacher Brauerei Events

Come meet Thomas Wölfel of Kulmbacher this Thursday, 20 February and Sunday, 23 February.

NYC Beer Week is coming up? Tell that to Kulmbacher, our venerable Franconian brewer. Just as Gotham prepares to confront the latest batch of super-amped Yank quadruple mint IPAs and Moccaccino Espresso Lemon Peanut Pale Porters, those lederhosen-loving Teutons are sending over worldwide export manager Thomas Wölfel to America to talk up pilsners, weizens, schwarzes, kellers, and eisbocks! Who says the Shelton Brothers are contrarian?

This Thursday, fresh off the plane, the globe-trotting Thomas will be whisked away to Jimmy’s No. 43 for a rare Kulmbacher Industry Tap Night, highlighting the extremeties of the brewery’s impressive range - including the  deliciously sessionable EKU Pils and Mönchshof Kellerbier, the classic “Kulmbacher-Style” Mönchshof Schwarz, and the wintery, warming Kulmbacher Eisbock - the original ice beer.  As an added bonus (and one to be more appreciated perhaps after an eisbock or two) various Shelton staff will/may appear in traditional Franconian garb!

If you absolutely can’t get to Jimmy’s on Thursday (or even if you can), Thomas and Brother Joel will also host an informal tasting session Sunday, 5:30-8, at UES bottle-shop/café City Swiggers.  Eisbock will be featured on the draft board and your hosts will pour free samples from the wide selection of Kulmbacher bottles on offer in the shop. Don’t miss this event if you want to see how a real live Franconian wears his lederhosen....Prost!

Jimmy's No. 43 is located at 43 E. 7th Street.

City Swiggers is at 320 E. 86th Street.

French Beer Tasting at City Swiggers

It's July which, for Shelton Brothers, means French Beer. You've got Bastille Day and the Tour de France. French beers are good year-round but we like to highlight them during the month of July.

Join us on Wednesday, July 10, at City Swiggers, 320 E. 86th Street from 6-9 pm for a free tasting of several French beers:
  • Bretagne Celtika - Belgian-style tripel
  • Bretagne Gwiniz Du - traditional buckwheat ale from Brittany
  • Castelain Ch'ti Triple - not a Belgian tripel but a stronger blonde bière de garde
  • Mont Blanc La Blonde - brewed with glacial water from Mont Blanc and subtly spiced with coriander and liquorice
  • Page 24 Réserve Hildegarde Ambrée - hoppy amber bière de garde

Tasting at City Swiggers

On Wednesday, 20 February, we'll be sampling some of our beers at City Swiggers on the Upper East Side. If you're not familiar with City Swiggers, it's been a welcome edition to the uptown beer scene for just over a year. Alan and Pamela run a great little shop where you can pick up bottles, get your growler filled, and stay for a pint from one of their 14 taps.

Come by to try beers from Jolly Pumpkin, Mikkeller, 8 Wired, Adnams, Bretagne, De Ranke, Freigeist, plus cider from Henney's.

City Swiggers is located at 320 E. 86th Street. The tasting starts around 5:30pm and runs until 9pm.

City Swiggers Grand Opening Party

When:  Thursday, 8 December, 5-10 pm
Where:  City Swiggers, 320 E. 86th St.
What:  pay-as-you-go

Rejoice Upper East Siders and Beer Lovers! There is a new beer shop in town. Our friend Alan Rice has opened up an oasis of beer in the parched uptown desert. Drop by and welcome Alan and his wife Pam to the neighborhood, stick around for a pint, and enjoy some tasty vegan treats at their Grand Opening party. And why not pick up a few bottles while you're at it. Beer makes the perfect gift - even for yourself!

City Swiggers has a tasting room so you can hang out and drink beer while perusing the shelves. They also fill growlers (bring your own or pick up one there) although they will not be filling growlers during the party on Thursday.
